Our Staff and Leadership

Katie Estes, Co-Pastor, has been at home in the church all her life, and seeks to make it a home for everyone else as well.  Her passions in ministry include preaching and creative worship experiences as well as education across the life journey.  She is a list-maker with a very messy office (guess what never makes it on the list).  Katie has served the church for 20 years with congregations in Tucson, AZ; Roseville and Bloomington, MN; and here in South St. Paul since June 2001.  She received her B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul and an M.Div. degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.  Katie lives in South St. Paul with her children Grace and DeShawn.

Tom Watson, Co-Pastor, has over 20 years experience in youth ministry and can usually be found playing and goofing off with the kids.  His two children would really appreciate it if he would find someone his own age to play with instead. Given the abundance of adolescent adult men in the congregation this shouldn't be a problem.  He loves to preach, teach, and write using really big words and lots of commas.  Tom received his M.Div. degree from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1996, and is currently completing a PhD degree from Luther Seminary.  He has lived in the Twin Cities since he was three years old, and currently lives in Como Park with his wife, Lisa (also a Presbyterian minister serving as a chaplain at Regions Hospital) and their two children, Emily and Ben.

Eleta Pierce, Church Administrator, is the friendly voice you will hear when you call the office and the friendly face you will see when you come into the office. She has been working for Presbyterian churches since 2006, FPC-SSP since 2012, and is a member of Edgcumbe Presbyterian Church. She views her roll in the church as her calling and enjoys being part of God's ministry. Eleta is a life-long resident of the West Side of St. Paul where she resides with her three children, Christopher, Tierra, and Zack.

Linda Kachelmeier, Director of Music and Handbells, is the one clear and resonant note among us!  She plans worship music and secures special guests, directs our vocal and bell choirs, leads our ensembles, encourages our soloists, teaches our children, and writes new music—all with a song in her heart.  A composer and performer of sacred and secular music, Linda sang with the former a capella ensemble Dare to Breathe, and currently is a member of the award-winning Rose Ensemble.  She began her ministry of music at First Presbyterian in 1991 as director of the Children's Choir and Celebration Singers and has added responsibilities over the years, becoming an integral part of the leadership of the congregation.  Linda lives in St. Paul with her husband Mike and their poodle Curly.  She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received a degree in Choral Music Education.

Cynthia Mortensen, Organist, joined our staff in July 2018. Cynthia grew up in St. Paul, and graduated with a B.A. in Organ Performance from the College of St. Catherine in 1980. She studied organ with Robert Wolfe, Dr. Paul Manz at Concordia College in St. Paul, and Dr. James Callahan at St. Thomas University.  After returning to school to receive her licensure in Music Education, she was the Choral Director at Cretin-Derham Hall for more than fifteen years. She is an adjudicator for Regional Choral and Vocal Solo/Ensemble Contests sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. She is the Director of the North Suburban Chorus in Roseville. She has served as a choral conductor and organist throughout her career, beginning her first position in St. Paul at the age of 16, and serving different denominations over the years. Cynthia has sung with The Minnesota Chorale, Kantorei and the Bach Society Chorus. She has a fondness for jazz, and has performed with a few big bands in the Twin Cities.  She is a member of the VoiceCare Network, the American Guild of Organists, and the American Choral Director’s Association and Minnesota Music Teacher’s Association.  She teaches voice and piano. Her hobbies include gardening, knitting and reading. As shown in her photo, her favorite companion is Ellie, her Shitzu/King Charles Cavalier mix!

Our Elders and Deacons

Like all Presbyterian Churches, the business of our church, including its finances, personnel, programs, mission and care are managed by elected and ordained officers of the congregation under the guidelines established generations ago by our founders.  Elders serve on the Session as the representatives of the membership to provide leadership in all aspects of church management. Deacons also represent the membership in the caring and nurture areas of ministry both within and outside of our doors.

Most of the volunteer ministry of the church is handled by committees that are established by Session and chaired by Elders.  Both members and non-members of the church are able to serve on committees.  Our goal is to let people do what they do best in areas that excite their enthusiasm and commitment.
