On December 13, 1893,
twenty dedicated people gathered to worship in South St. Paul. That small
group grew to a congregation and was incorporated as First Presbyterian
Church in 1896. In September of that year, FPC's first church building, at
the corner of Fifth and Marie in South St. Paul, was dedicated.
In 1956, the congregation decided to build a new church. The following
year the property at Fifth and Marie was sold and a new church location,
at 20th Avenue and Wentworth Avenue, was dedicated. The new church
building was dedicated in February, 1959. In 1993, to celebrate its 100th
birthday, First Presbyterian dedicated an addition which included new
office space, a lovely commons area, a large meeting room, a choir room
and a youth room.
During its more than 100 years of ministry, the congregation has been
committed to programming for children and youth, overseas and local
mission projects, continuing Christian education for people of all ages, a
high-quality music program, and active groups for women, men, youth and
young adults, couples and older adults.
In May, 1995, the congregation approved a five-year ministry plan called
Reaching Up, Reaching Out, which challenged the congregation to reach out
to a new generation of Christians who are longing for spiritual growth or
renewal and to nurture in all ways families of all types.
We welcome you to our church and invite you to become part of our family.
There's a place for you in our family tree; our roots are old and deep.
